On December 31, 2019, the FAA released its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the Remote Identification of Unmanned Aircraft. After years of waiting, the time had finally come for the public to make its voice heard on this key issue. On March 2, 2020, the comment period will close and we will know what the public really thinks.

Remote identification of unmanned aircraft is the cornerstone upon which will be built the full integration of unmanned aircraft into the national airspace system. It is vitally important that the FAA “get it right.” If the remote ID solution is too restrictive, innovation may be crushed and the industry could be set back years. If the solution is too lax, it will create unnecessary risks and undermine public confidence and acceptance of unmanned aircraft. Of course, with so many stakeholders affected by the rule, such as hobbyists, manned aviation, and small and large commercial UAS operators, not everyone will be happy.
